The Signs of Suicide (SOS) program that Elyssa’s Mission funds and implements in Illinois schools includes a vital screening component: the Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression (BSAD). In order to make the screening process more efficient on SOS program days, Elyssa’s Mission seeks to collaborate with behavioral health providers. Qualified staff from behavioral health hospitals volunteer their time to assist school mental staff with the student follow-up process. Students whom have been identified by the BSAD and/or Student Response Cards require further evaluation in order to determine if school- or community-based referrals are warranted. Behavioral health staff help facilitate students interviews, and can also offer valuable consultation in the event students require further attention.
